In today’s gospel the disciples watch Jesus pray, and when he is finished, they ask him to teach them how to pray. Jesus gives them- and us- a prayer: simple words of praise and petition, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He also gives them an attitude for prayer. Though the words are simple, they must be disciplined. Persistence-unceasing and untiring persistence-must be the attitude of all of us when we offer prayer to God. God will hear us but we must ask, seek and knock unceasingly. Jesus also teaches today that there is no such thing as an unanswered prayer. The answer given may not be the same one we want or expect, but will be the best one for us in the long run. Something always happens when you pray and keep on praying. Look on God as your friend who wants to share the ups and downs with you. Talk to him as you would a friend.
